About the Metropolitan Water Directorate

The Metropolitan Water Directorate leads a whole-of-government approach to water planning for greater Sydney and the lower Hunter, and has over 10 years’ experience in urban water planning and policy.

The Directorate works closely with state agencies and water utilities, stakeholders and the community as part of its approach to securing sustainable water supplies for greater Sydney and the lower Hunter.

Through this process, the Directorate has produced balanced, effective long-term water plans for greater Sydney in 2004, 2006, 2010, and for the lower Hunter in 2014. The 2017 Metropolitan Water Plan was release in March 2017 following an extensive review process. The review was undertaken in collaboration with water utilities and state agencies, key industry stakeholders and the community and in line with the National Urban Water Planning Principles adopted by all Australian governments in 2008.

This work is supported by an Independent Water Advisory Panel that provides strategic and technical advice on urban water planning for the two regions.

In addition to developing water plans for greater Sydney and the lower Hunter, the Directorate provides advice on NSW urban water policy and reforms.
