Water Wise Rules

Water Wise Rules were introduced in June 2009 after dam storage levels had remained steady at around 60 percent for 12 months and drought restrictions were lifted.

Using water wisely, more recycling projects and desalination, along with our water supply dams, means greater Sydney's water supply is in a strong position. However, with our highly variable climate and rapidly growing population, continuing to be water wise makes good sense.

The Water Wise Rules apply throughout greater Sydney, the Illawarra and the Blue Mountains.

The Water Wise Rules are:

  • All hoses must now have a trigger nozzle.
  • Watering is allowed before 10am and after 4pm on any day – to avoid the heat of the day.
  • No hosing of hard surfaces such as paths and driveways, but washing vehicles is allowed.
  • Fire hoses may be used for fire fighting activities only.
